Slapass Creations Gallery Show
Matt Szech – I have always wanted to have my own art company, but I was never sure how to make this dream a reality. Since I could hold a pencil, I have been drawing crazy characters and monsters. I did my first acrylic painting in high school and I was instantly hooked. Years later, while attending the Art Institute for animation, I drew the logo for Slapass Creations. I knew two things: I didn’t want to return to school and I wanted to display my art on shirts. My first step was to approach my dad and uncle about starting an art company. Then, I started working full time, saving money to get my first batch of shirts made. I sold these shirts at local bars and my band’s shows. Putting the profit into generating more products, I continued making new shirt designs – I wanted to make a company that showcased my art in every possible way.
After a couple of years, it was time to take the company to the next level. Instead of having a silk screener make my shirts, I purchased a four-color press and set up my own production. I trademarked my company name and started sponsoring local riders to help spread the word about Slapass Creations. Making my own product encouraged me to work harder to push my name and my art. At the same time I was adding other aspects to my company, doing custom paintings skateboard decks, fridge doors, welding helmets and mural work at different music venues and businesses. By constantly brainstorming to keep the ideas rolling and adding new media to the company – who knows what we will come up with next!
